NiSi V7 - continuous improvement

Continuing on the already refined design of the V6, NiSi managed to add some subtleties that really make a difference. The biggest one: inserting the CPL with only one twist.

Main features of the new NiSi V7 design.

The main features of the new V7 filter holder are the refinement of the locking mechanism. The locking screw is now caged, which helps to quickly lock the holder to the main adapter ring and it makes the pin less prone to bending or breaking. The material and general design of the holder are the same as for the V6, which was already great. New is the way of inserting the CPL, more on that below.

NEW: True Color CPL

New for the V7 is the True Color CPL, which is specially made for NiSi.

The new True Color CPL has no color cast or increased saturation, found in many other CPL filters. If we look at the NiSi Landscape CPL, it makes the colors slightly cooler and more saturated. The new True Color CPL has none of these characteristics.

When to use the True Color CPL?
Personally I think it’s great to use for architecture and landscape photography when you don’t want that slight boost in saturation but need the polarizing effect of the CPL. When photographing during autumn in the woods, I would personally rather use the NiSi Landscape CPL as for this specific usage it’s actually good to have some extra vibrancy in the image.

What’s really great of the new design of the V7 is the way the CPL is inserted.
From now on you only have to line up the white lines on the CPL and the main adapter ring and turn a few degrees and the CPL is locked into place. For me this is a great new feature as it is much easier to attach and detach the CPL, even with gloves.

Side by side comparison

The images above are shot at 15 mm with the NiSi 15mm manual focus lens. All straight out of camera.

  • Image nr. 1 is shot without any filters.
  • Image nr. 2 is shot with the True Color CPL
  • Image nr. 3 is shot with the Landscape CPL

The CPL position was at maximum polarization, which means we will get a dark spot in the top of the frame at 15mm. This is normal for any CPL attached to a ultra wide lens.
As you can see the True Color CPL is indeed more color neutral than image nr. 3 which is taken with the Landscape CPL. An other thing you can immediately notice is the amount of light the CPL takes from the image. The exposure was set on the sky and by removing some of the reflections at the very bottom of the image, we even get some more detail back.
Both CPL filters do their job, it’s up to you which one you prefer for which usage.

Verdict

For me the V7 is a needed successor of the V6. The small changes that NiSi has incorporated into the new design really make a difference. The guarded locking pin is an improvement to the V6, which protects the pin from breaking or bending. (This has happened to mine after a few months of using the V6) The new way of locking the CPL in place is a huge improvement and makes it even possible to add or remove the CPL with gloves on. This is the biggest improvement for me.

When to upgrade to the V7:

  • when you have any version prior to the V6, as the design changes really make it worth upgrading
  • when you want to use the new True Color CPL
  • when you want the easiest way of attaching the CPL to your NiSi filter kit
